Gluing down edges of sanding discs

Has anyone used a particular product to reattach the edges of a paper sanding disc to the metal disc? I used a heat gun to try to get the original adhesive to stick again. That worked for the night I was in the shop. The next day, the edges aren't sticking. Wondering if I could reapply some type of adhesive to the edges. The disc is otherwise still good, barely used.

I do believe that Nick SOMEWHERE said to use the 3M spray. I think it was on one of the sawdust session videos.

Found it, 3rd reply down.

I had some 3M spray adhesive. I think I am all out. Used the last of it to apply grass paper to daughter's train table. Figures...

IMHO, the 3M spray adhesive is a wonderful short-term adhesive. There is nothing wrong with reapplying it over and over. I have used it, do use it and will continue to use it; however, it is not the best. Image I have used the velcro system from the get-go and do not have any experience with disks coming off at the edges. Image I can't help but to think that contact cement would work.

I have been using the 3M 77 spray for nearly a year and had excellent luck with it. It is a bit pricey yet far cheaper than replacing sanding disk paper. Jim

Howdy,

Do self-adhesive sprays, e.g., 3M 77, allow you to remove sandpaper with hot water?

Happy trails,
mike

Hi Mike,
I haven't tried using the spray adhesive on sanding disks, so I do not know, but among other uses, I have used it for applying plastic "No Trespassing" signs on to wood boards and posted same out in the elements. These signs tend to come apart after just a few months and I reapply the glue as necessary. My point is the fact that water does seem to hasten separation, and that leads me to think that hot water may be one method that will work. If it doesn't work, or leaves a residue, you can always clean it off with some kind of solvent, such as mineral spirits (paint thinner) or lacquer thinner.

I,ve been using DAP spray adhesive. Started using it since I've had a hard time finding 3M in my area. It has good adhesion. Make sure the disk is clean and dry, then spray both the disk and the back of the sanding pad. Wait a few moments till both sides are dry but sticky, and apply. It dissolves off cleanly with mineral spirits. Also work well for holding down patterns. But I've just started putting painters tape on the wood first, then spraying and attaching the pattern. It makes removal easier.

I've had a problem with 2.5" of sand paper coming off every time i put it down. I just store the disk sandpaper side down. the weight of the disk holds the paper on for hours of use.

Wish it were that easy for me. The disc that mine is peeling off of is on a delta sanding center. Non removable disc.

I haven't got around to picking up some spray adhesive yet. I'll keep my eyes open for the DAP product also.
