Yesterday's Project

Last year my neighbor had his house trim painted. The painters destroyed his gate but promised to fix it when they finished; they took their money and disappeared. A month ago I showed him an ad from HD for knot-free cedar for fences and told him how many he needed and that I would help build a new gate if he wanted. He has neither the tools nor the know-how. He bought everything, plus one additional board - just in case. We finished the gate and he had one board left over. He said it wasn't worth taking back and I could have it or he would just toss it.
What can you do with a single 5 1/2 x 1/2 x 6 piece of cedar? I decided to build this yesterday. Even had some short pieces left over.
Of course it's not quite the workmanship or quality of Farmer's projects but it's for the birds.

There ya go.
There are no scraps. Just shorter and shorter pieces waiting to be used.

The board feet available determined the design. Height was dictated by the bottle. It is held in place by rubber tubing with holes drilled through the back and stapled on the backside. Weight of the bottle keeps it in place. There is a block of wood (45 degree cut) on the back of the base. I found I needed this to keep too much seed from spilling out and also to push it forward instead of piling up at the back.
Google "wine bottle bird feeder" for some variations.

Great job. Attractive, recyled and reused. Now the squirrels will come. I use only canola seeds for the birds. No squirrels.
Canola seeds available in the Lowe's garden section.
