A few weeks ago (a couple days before XP Maintenance was to cease) I became aware than XP would no longer receive updates. Hearing this, I gathered up the two computers that I have that run on XP and performed a complete Windows update on each of the machines.

I have yet to drag the laptop back out of storage but the other machine (resides in my shop mostly for Cad and Sketchup) was fired up today. I was going to load Chrome on it.

I have not yet been able to do that because the computer is out there in the shop catching up on 38 Windows updates.

QUESTION of the Day: Did Windows change their minds and are they still maintaining XP?

I believe the updates you are getting are the ones up to the "no new updates" date. The update repository is still there for XP, Server 2003, Office 2003, etc. There will be no "new" updates created for those platforms.

I would accept that without question except that I caught up on "updates" just a day or two before the cutoff.

That machine just shut down so the updates that it was running have all been installed. Maybe I'll be able to decipher what has just happened by looking at "History".

I'm running MSE on the laptop right now. When that finishes, I'll shut down and if there are updates waiting for that machine...it will just repeat my question.

Are you sure you were totally caught up on updates? You'll frequently have to re-run the update check until there are no available updates. If you installed one round of updates and left it at that, there may have still been more updates waiting to download in a second, and perhaps even third round.

It's also possible they released some updates on the last day.

Good points. No, I am not certain that I was totally caught up. These two computers are hardly ever connected to the Internet so they may have been way outdated.

That day, I ran the updates and after the machines shut down I may not have ever turned them on again. If there were additional updates, I would not have known.

I may never know. The laptop just attempted to shut down after running MSE and it is now installing #16 of 128 updates. This is an old, slow Dell Latitude. It might take all night to do that many updates.

Here's a screen shot from an XP machine I have here. I ran updates on Apr 9....Apr 8 was, I believe, the 'cut-off date'.
There has been 1 actual 'security patch' since then that I applied on May 9. I believe that was Microsoft's response to the big hoo-haa over the OpenSSL/Heartbleed bug. Other than that, there have been no new patches.

MS does still appear to be releasing new versions of the Malicious Software Removal Tool. MSRT is not a patch/fix/update, but a scanning tool for malware. Will be interesting to see if there is a June version released again next week.

I believe they are also still releasing signature files for the MS anti-virus program.....

I got XP updates after the end date. So I guess Microsoft is still doing some updating. I know my computer was up to date and I am positive I received more updates.

Forgive me, please. This is embarassing:o and confusing at the same time. I'll not admit that it is the result of my age but something is going on that I don't comprehend.

The laptop that just finished installing 128 updates cannot be connected toi the internet. It appears that the wireless interface is inoperative.

Could there have been 128 updates that had been downloaded but not installed until this time when I shut down the laptop?confused:

YES. Many MS updates won't install until ya do a restart.
