I went to the local Lowe's to pick up a box of screws, a $10 item.
When I checked out the bill was over $50!
What happened?
Well first I made the mistake of going by the tool area.
Second I found that a lot of the Bessey tools were on sale. The VAS-23 (strap clamp) $9.59, Bessey 12" duoklamp (one handed clamp and spreader) $6.45.... A Kobalt 3pc adjustable wrench set $11.98....
Good thing I have such good control or the bill could have been more like $150.
No idea of your local lowe's is offering such deals.

Some good deals on Besseys also at Home Depot. They have a 4 clamp set for 19.99 that I picked up tonight.

Into Lowe's this afternoon to pay my bill. Started to go over to the tool area and went straight out side instead!!
Then over to HD (about 3 blocks away) for lumber and only bought one yes one thing not on my list (an Irwin Marples Japanese draw saw). Out of there with only $58 spent. Even left a few things in the bins to see if I could get them cheaper on Amazon.
Not certain why I was so darn frugal / cheap.
Well actually, I do. A friend has a 510 which he only wants to use as a lathe so I asked him to shoot me a price on all his SPTs, etc. if he wants to sell. Saving for that!!! If he does sell to me, it will be the first time I've
not travelled 90 or more miles to buy Shopsmith toys.
And so it goes!
Be well,
Ben

Ben, look for a model 10 for your friend, and give it to him, instead of his Mark-X. If all he wants is a lathe, he'll be happier, and you'll get more goodies. (Look for a Model 10 with a speedchanger, he'll appreciate that.)
The consensus here, is the model 10 is the better lathe and drill-press, but the Mark-Xs beat it on everything else. Cast iron makes a better lathe, but makes lifting into drill-press mode "funner." The larger table on the Mark-X makes it better in the other uses.
If you're lucky, you can find one on CL for $150 or so. (I've paid that much for one, with a speedchanger, delivered.)

Hey Steve,
Funny you should mention that.... I have my Dad's 10er in the garage and it's on a heavy angle iron frame. Never thought of asking my friend if he wanted to swap (with some cash). I currently have a 510 and two 500s waiting for me to sell (don't have the room for the extra units and my new Mark 7 is great for me), but maybe I can go into business selling used Mark Vs.
Thanks for that idea! I'll ask him tomorrow or Monday.
Be well,
Ben

Ed, thanks for your post!!
I was out and about again today, so I went back to Lowe's. SCORE! All their Bessey stuff was on sale as closeout. Much was picked clean but still a few goodies went with me. As I walked farther I found a new Hitachi 2" brad nailer for $50. Went over to HD to check on Bessey with the idea of price matching, but all they had were the small 4" clamps.
Thanks again.
Be well,
Ben

I have to confess to going back again......... you know you never have enough clamps, you have 10 and the project requires 11. So I did get some bar clamps and a few other goodies. A couple of things gifts and the receiver will never know how little I spent of the items.
