I tried turning a bowl (new to turning) and found the stock tool rest really is a weakness. I'm afraid I can't afford a new universal tool rest. Do they ever show up on eBay, and at what cost? I can see one sold on eBay recently for $70 plus shipping (I think $40, but it's no longer showing). Am I hoping for the impossible?

I'm not actively shopping ebay but in the past I've seen them listed. They are heavy so expect the shipping to be a major component of the total cost.

There might be a few ways to make the bowl turning experience a little better until you have the major cost of the universal tool rest. I'm not a bowl turner myself but we have several people here who are. They might be willing to provide some solutions or improvements based on their experience. Sure worth asking.

Ah, good point about the shipping. Then there is getting it delivered...
One week I ordered both an old 15lbs sledge hammer head to use as a tiny anvil and some steel to play with, only to have to fight tooth and nail to get them to my door. The mailman kept leaving "sorry I missed you, come pick it up yourself if you want it" notes on my gate, knowing as he doors that I'm home and that my dog will bark if he tried to sneak the note on my door. He just didn't want to have to carry it!

Now, before you take that as a slam against the post office on general, his boss ended up driving it over himself at almost 9pm when the mailman kept that up for over a week. That was above and beyond, even if it was due to his lazy underling.

I'll post some questions after I try some more and know what to ask. I'm still just trying to figure it out.
