The lever engages and disengages the gears to the gear rack. One position and the headstock is cranked back and forth along the gear rack. The other it can be pushed along the way tubes like the Mark V.

As a guy who’s trying to exercise restraint, watching you VII guys work together is a good way to sort of have the experience via osmosis.

If the time should ever come these posting may prove an invaluable resource for VII newbies.
