I thought I would share pictures of a music stand I finished. I made it from walnut. First sealed with shellack, then finished with wipe on polyurethane, and finished with Johnson Paste wax. I wanted a high gloss. I used pumice and rotten-stone between applications of shellack to first develop a French polish. I felt the Polyurethane would help protect against scratches.

Interior of the storage box was flocked using green flocking dust. The top is adjustable to 90, 75, 45, and 25 degrees. Secured with brass ball chain, on both sides so it cannot fall open and damage the top.

I made and used walnut rope molding on the edges of stiles and rails that hold the walnut floating panel.

I used thin sliced Lace wood cuts to cover the square pegs used to help secure the morticed stiles and rails. The top is secured with a brass piano hinge.

Floating panels, bottom in walnut, the top storage box bottom in Pine. Solid brass rollers mounted on end of legs. I turned the bottom stretchers from walnut.

Outstanding delivery. Did you make it for someone, or just to make it?

I made it for our church where it can be used to store a Bible and used for readings, or for music. I have a hunch it will be used as a stand for unity candles during weddings.

Quite nice! Can you tell us more about the rope-molding and how you made it?

When I was turning the three bottom 1/2" dia. rungs for the three sides, I glued up walnut to turn 3/4" diameter round, but glued it with wax paper in the glue joint. I did that so I could more easily seperate the two halves after turning the rope. To make a spiral check out p.208 of your Power Tool Woodworking For Everyone, by DeCristoforo, or p. 192 in the older PTWFE book. They describe the process quite well. For my stand, it was a smaller twist, but same principles, and you have to be prepared to break/mess-up some stock!
