Getting a plane(the kind we are accustomed to) that sharp may be a stumbling point.

That was the first project I ever made......NOT. That is one sharp plane!!!,!,

How beautiful! The patients it must take to do all that work. Most people don't have it. It's the sign of a true craftsman.

Way cool Mike. I wonder if he applys a finish to prevent the lead from rubbing off.

Japanese planes are pulled toward you which is to improve control. The same principle as with Japanese saws, cutting on the pull stroke improves straightness of cut. (Same principle can be demonstrated by pulling a string through water, as opposed to pushing it.) Also, note how he moistens the surface before slicing it. I think it must slightly raise the end grain and lubricate the surface for cutting. Japanese plane blades, like the Samurai sword tradition that created them, are something to behold.

In regard to use of moisture on the end grain, I always teach that one should moisten end grain before using either a plane or a knife of any sort on it. For shooting a square end, a wipe of mineral spirits will ease the job considerably.
