What would be a good price to offer for this one? He is asking $975 and claims its in good shape. Obviously the sellers idea of good shape differs substantially from mine.

That poor machine needs a whole lot of TLC, which will greatly limit the market. Here's one on eBay in similar condition, that also includes a DC3300 and a scroll saw. If it sells cheap tomorrow, I'd use it to establish current market value, and deduct about 1/3 for the "missing" dust collector and scroll saw.

Here's another price reference near me on Craigslist. It's a golden-anniversary 510 with jointer, and appears to be in excellent condition. The asking price is only $700, and it has been listed for a couple of weeks with no taker yet.

Depends if those are pits on the upper slide tubes or just surface rust/grime. The cutter head on the shaper looks a little rusty as well. Are the knives any good? I would offer no more than $600 based on what I can see.

Print off the other two from the other posts and show the seller what the difference between those and his and then let the negotiations begin.

$900.00 seems pretty steep for a 510 in that condition, I guess it depends on what part of the country you live in and the demand. I was lucky enough to pick up a beautiful 510 with a joiner and new lathe chisels for $225.00, though the average market price in New England for a 500/510 seems to range from $200-$1,100.

The machine itself is presumably not too old, as the bandsaw and jointer both have the newer upgrades, but that being said it clearly has been poorly stored and cared for - lots of obvious corrosion, which would lead me to believe its been stored outside and exposed to the elements. Lots of TLC and restoration needed to make it at a minumum reliably functional and preferably also deal with the corrosion and paint failure etc. This is all labor intensive and time is $$, so personally I don't see it worth any more than $300-$500, depending on specifics of condition upon further inspection.

I have a feeling, that like snowmobiles (which I collect), value varies as to where you are at.

A couple of those if they were here, I'd be on the phone or bidding. Unfortunately the cost/PIA factor of shipping a shopsmith is generally not an option.....

Most that are located here seem to be a bit on the rough/unused side and are close to if not exceeding 4 figures. There generally is one available local (within 150 miles) but not a whole assortment available. Some have extra attachements (my number 1 unit did which is why I purchased that one), but most really don't. But attachments don't seem to gain additional value in the used market here.

The greenie that I just purchased, while a bit on the rough/unused side also, is substantially cheaper and that is why I went for it. But I bet I have a few repairs to make which drives the "real price" up. I still hope to be in it for less than $300.00-350 up and running. But it is 150 miles away..... Fortunately I get that way periodically, and they are willing to wait until I get there.

So for those of you that seem to have these coming out of the woodwork (pun intended ), feel lucky.

Another shopsmith went on the market today locally. $850 but it has a vac and a bandsaw. I might see if I can purchase the vac from him...
