Trading in a headstock towards a power pro

Hey all, Glad to see such an active SS community out here, this site has been a real help to me. Probably wishful thinking, but I thought I read somewhere that shopsmith would take a headstock to refurb as part of a deal towards a power pro.
My headstock is an 81 and in good condition, lately I've just had an itch to upgrade it though and was hoping to find a good deal on an all new or fully refurbished power pro. They are doing a demo in a week or two about an hour from my house and I was wondering if it would be worth it to drive up and talk to the person demoing.
Thanks!

I was at one last month in Appleton, WI. I WAS VERY IMPRESSED!!! Mike Young was the demonstrator, discounts up the wazoo, if you were a veteran, buying today, ect. Seemed things were negotiable too.

That is very promising! I may take the day off, toss my headstock in the car, and pickup my veteran brother on the way

Thanks for the reply

Having purchased my PowerPro DIY upgrade at a Lowes demo along with the Mark 7 upgrade and a 520 upgrade, there were discounts for the package and being a veteran. The was also one for using their CC/getting their CC, but I didn't use that one. Total was a tad over $2K in the Fall of 2011. I don't remember any discussion of a trade-in on-site at the demo. I'd suggest you call SS CS to verify that before lugging your headstock along for no reason. I doubt the demo guys are in the business of carrying around old head stocks from site to site on their routes and then bulk shipping them back to Dayton.
BTW, they only take orders at these demos and the product is then shipped from SS when available... If they took your headstock, you'd be out of business until you received the new one. The DIY kit price will be the lowest one if price is a concern for you.

As a casual observer, I have two comments.
1) I do not believe that Shopsmith will accept your headstock for service
at one of the demos. I believe you will have to box it up and ship to them in Dayton, Ohio. Call customer service to be sure.
2) If you are going to have your headstock upgraded to a PowerPro, they will accept a headstock without the motor, the sheaves, the quill, etc. Those parts that
will be replaced as part of the upgrade do not need to be in the headstock that you send to them. Again, however, call customer service to verify that.

Sounds like you got a pretty good deal Leif,
Good points guys, I think I was more concerned with validating that my headstock was in great condition to work towards a maximum discount, didnt plan on just walking in with it and walking out with a power pro. After having it off the waytubes 4 or 5 times since purchasing it I dont really consider it much of a hassle to bring it along, even only as a just in case.
I was thinking along the lines of "they have to get the refurbished ones they are selling from somewhere" so it seemed worth investigating. I'll call Shopsmith Customer Service monday morning to see if they can give me any kind of breakdowns on what kinds of deals to expect or other offers.
Either way, if the best deal is on the DIY, I'll get the DIY, just want to play all the cards possible.

If you plan on ordering at the demo, make sure your brother brings his discharge papers and or Military ID. I think if using a Lowes CC or getting one at the time of ordering it was a 5 or 10% discount, BUT that may have only been on a completed new machine.

From a 24 yr retired US Army Officer, a point of ethics... SS/Lowes offers a military discount in recognition of a veteran's or retiree's honorable service to our country. If you are a veteran or military retiree, by all means, take advantage of the discount. If you are not, please do not fraudulently obtain a benefit that you did not earn with your service and sacrifice.

Noted. Not trying to rip off anyone or get over on anybody. Probably should have mentioned my brother has been looking for a mark v lately as well, no harm in bringing him along to see if he is interested in anything but it would be obvious that I am the shopsmith guy when talking about the trade in and I wouldn't pass for his id or anything like that anyway. If they want to give us a discount on a package deal that would be swell though.
