Hi Ya'll:

Hey, just replaced both belts in my 510. Found the lower pully stuck. Fixed that problem. Then cleaned and lubed as specified in manual. Replaced both the V and Poly V belts. Now when I turn the machine on the motor only hums. Remove the drive belt and motor runs and the spindle turns freely. Whats with that? LOL

It sounds like a belt is stuck too far down between two of the sheaves.

Mount the sanding disk and with the machine unplugged, rotate the sanding disk while at the same time changing the speed control. Take the speed control to low speed.

After doing this, plug it back in and check it out.

Let us know what happens, please.

I assume that the belts you installed were both from Shopsmith.

Gosh, I thought I had done what you suggest but still have a problem. I'll try it again tomorrow though.

I do recall that it appeared that the V belt was way down in the top pulley. However, the manual tells me to run the speed control to "High Speed". This would mean the top pulley would be wide open would it not?

Boy I'm lost on this doggone thing. It's gonna run tho. Or it's gonna become a boat anchor.

It'll run. No doubt.

It just hums now because the belt is too far down in the upper sheave. It is stuck there and prevents the motor from moving the belt.

By using the sanding disk, you are going to manually walk in up out of there. Just turning the sanding disk may break it loose but changing the speed control while turning the sanding disk certainly will.
