Single Bearing Quill Shaft Questions

Hi all,
A few questions I have please:
1-Please see the attached image for reference. The old bearing on the shaft had a space between the backside of the bearing and the larger diameter of the shaft. This space appears to have a groove cut into the shaft.
My question is: Does this bearing need to be driven home flush against the larger portion or should the gap be there? The reason I ask is I watched a video of someone pressing on the bearing and they did not leave a space. Not knowing if this was an original bearing please provide some input. Also, meant to take a picture before the bearing removal but....
The picture indicates its position from memory for sure.
2-The quill and spline shaft had old grease inside while taking apart and cleaning. Also have watched videos where the person did not apply any grease.
Is this correct, grease or no grease? If yes to grease, what kind and how much? General Purpose Grease and ~30% of the cavity? I have read that somewhere regarding grease applications.
Please provide some input.
