Single Bearing Quill Shaft Questions

Hi all,
A few questions I have please:

1-Please see the attached image for reference. The old bearing on the shaft had a space between the backside of the bearing and the larger diameter of the shaft. This space appears to have a groove cut into the shaft.
My question is: Does this bearing need to be driven home flush against the larger portion or should the gap be there? The reason I ask is I watched a video of someone pressing on the bearing and they did not leave a space. Not knowing if this was an original bearing please provide some input. Also, meant to take a picture before the bearing removal but....
The picture indicates its position from memory for sure.

2-The quill and spline shaft had old grease inside while taking apart and cleaning. Also have watched videos where the person did not apply any grease.
Is this correct, grease or no grease? If yes to grease, what kind and how much? General Purpose Grease and ~30% of the cavity? I have read that somewhere regarding grease applications.
Please provide some input.

You appear to be missing the snap ring that retains the bearing in the quill.

Sorry forgot to answer #2. Grease is sometimes on the splines to aid the quill to move in and out of the drive shaft. Probably not necessary but I would apply a very LIGHT coating to the splines during reassembly.
OK too late for this kind of complicated stuff. The bearing should be seated against the stop. The snap ring is required when the quill is reinstalled into the quill housing. Also the bright metal knurled nut is not in the pic. The knurled nut prevents movement of the bearing.

OK, this MAY not apply to Mark series Shopsmiths, but the original design had grease applied in the quill/drive shaft.

Back then, we'd advance the quill an inch or so, pack some grease in the back side of the drive shaft, and then retract the quill, with a finger covering the back end of the drive shaft. This would force the grease into the quill/drive shaft interface.

Since the Model 10 (E and ER) are different from the Mark series Shopsmiths, YMMV. (Your Mileage May Vary, or the procedure is different.) But you DO want grease on the splines.

I have the snap ring. Not a complete picture. Just the subject area I was asking about.
Thanks. Yeah I thought it should be seated as most bearings do. Just needed to ask.

I think someone before me changed belts and the quill bearing only and didn't seat it.
The remaining bearings were shot (likely original) but all good now.

Definitely am going to lubricate the spline shaft some but there was a MEDIUM coating from previous owner. Basically you could gather it up from the inside and on the shaft. More than very LIGHT for sure.

The knurled nut (collar) is also not in the picture. I have that as well.

Grease? I have not seen grease called out in the Maintenance Procedures for the Mark 5/V anywhere. Please point me to that procedure.

Agree completely. Just wondering as I saw grease from original and no grease in a video.

I believe in grease with metal mating parts that rotate!! Reduces friction and heat buildup.

The quill spline does not mate with metal; maybe that is why no grease is called out?

Maybe the grease I witnessed was in fact MAGNA-LUBE??

my quill spline shaft (metal) slides into the Glimer drive sleeve (also metal).

Somewhat constitutes a mating need for grease?

Magna-Lube. I did not intend to be discussing maintenance procedures for a 10. If you have a 10 or are talking about maintenance of a 10, my comments are inappropriate. I know nothing about the 10 except that none of them were manufactured by Shopsmith, Inc.
