I picked up a very clean 10er for cheap. The guy had a 220 motor on it. I want to use it for a designated drill press. I'm interested in a 110v 3/4hp or 1hp enclosed motor just in case I would use it as a lathe sometime. The 220 motor works, but it is a beast and would make moving up and down a chore. What has worked out for others?

Besides weight, the location of the start capacitor should be considered. Internal would be best. This only applies when horizontal.

The shaft size needs to match the current pulley.

Other than that, I think any thing goes that will 'fit'(mount to the motor plate).

Where are you located ? What's your budget ? Have you considered a DC motor ? They are fantastic on the 10ER.

For drill-press work, and for lathe work, horsepower is not an issue. A 1/2 HP motor will work just fine, in either mode. Using the table saw, not so much.

As Jerry pointed out, the DC conversions, http://mkctools.com/dcmotorpage.htm are about the best you can get. Speed control is just amazing, and you'll want that with drill-press work, as well as lathe work.

Outside of a DC conversion motor, any 56 frame motor will bolt right onto your motor plate. You may need to cut a relief for the capacitor, though. (Most 56 frame motors have the cap on the bottom {as mounted on the ER} instead of on the side, like the ER likes.) You can cut the bench boards to work, though.

Oh, don't lose that 220 volt motor!
