I think these washer-dryer pedestals are a pretty good idea. Have you seen what they go for from the manufacturer?

Alas I cant find the receipts, but they aint cheap. We replaced our broken washer and dryer with a new set not long ago and got the pedestals- well worth the cost. If our washer weren't out of service I might have considered making peds, but since I'm not known for my overnight projects...

Anaway, the drawers are SUPER, and my back LOVES the machine height.
As for building, now that we have front-loaders I'm convinced construction would be a piece of cake. The load in the dryer is only as heavy as a 'damp' load, so no sweat, and the washer load is also not terribly heavy since this front-loader uses very little water (quarts, not gallons). My biggest concern would be potential racking, and there are ways to deal with that.

Sorry I cant remember the $$ involved, but I'm sure making your own would be a significant and worthwhile savings.

Concerning the load weight from the washer, our Bosch front loader is about six years old and to control the vibration from the very high RPM during the spin cycle, we were told there is 250 pounds of concrete in the base of the washer. Something you might want to check into about yours.

We replaced our old fashioned top loading washer with a Samsung front loader a couple years ago. The pedestal would have cost about 50% of what the washer cost! We decided to skip the pedestal but we do have to stoop to load and unload. I thought about making a pedestal but that's about as far as I got with that project :)

Let me say a word or 2 about how cool these new front loading washers are. Ours uses so little water, it is so quiet, it cleans so well on so little soap, it spins so fast the clothes are almost dry when they come out, I could go on and on. It's almost a pleasure to do laundry.

I try to buy products made in America but I have no problem buying anything made by Samsung. America has no better ally in the world than South Korea. South Korea is a shining example how the world could be compared to it's evil neighbor to the north.
