What was done to the Mark V Model 510 tables in 1986 that differentiate the tables.

Reference part numbers 522377 and 522298 in the Shopsmith Catalog.

I am not sure I understand your question. Is it about the Rip Fence as the title says or about the Scales which is where the link led me?

Sorry! My question was quit cryptic.

The link informs us that if ordering rails we need to determine wether the tables are pre or post 1986. I am not ordering rails but when I saw this it caused me to wonder what changes were made in 1986. Obviously something was done. I thought that with regard to the rails, the tables were all interchangeable.

Apparently not.

From what I have seen of the 510 tables, the table rails are round. The 520 table rails are flat. The scales upgrade also have a flat portion which attaches to the bottom of the 520 fence. I do not think it will work with a 510 fence.

The id of the 510 rails changed, but the reason for the dual catalog listing is the location of the mounting hardware for the front rail was also changed. Also the early 510 rails were mounted into tapped holes in the table, whereas the later 510 rails have studs and smooth bore holes and kep nuts. Early 510 rails are externally distinguished by the access holes on the face which provide access to the mounting screws.

Since the 510 to 520 upgrade 'kits' are also different, I presume the 520 rails may also be different?

The 520 rails are the same with regard to how they mount onto the tables. That is what confuses me. The differences that I see between the two versions of rails is that the later versions attach a metal ruler (using a self adhesive magnetic strip attached to the aluminum fence) and the earlier version does not.

I have both versions of 520 rails and either one will mount on my 510/520 tables which all have smooth bore holes. If I needed to mount these to an older version of table, I could convert those threaded bore holes to smooth bore holes in a jiffy.

Is that the only difference (with regard to mounting the rails)?

I believe one of the differences in the 510 to 520 conversion is the inclusion of a drill bit to ream those tapped hole threads. I do not know if a new hole is drilled at the 'new' mounting screw/stud location. If not that may explain the rail difference for the rule upgrade.


So there ARE two 520 front rail versions. Pre rule and post rule.

You drilled using the threaded holes. I used a bigger drill bit on all the larger tables so I had more adjustable rail range for using my 510 or 520 table rail jigs (gauge).

Forgive my ignorance, but do the later version have some kind of "ferrous" metal included, that would facilitate the attachment of the magnetic ruler? Magnets, (unless VERY strong) do not have magnetic capabilities. And then, they tend to repel, instead of attract.

Sorry, aluminum doesn't have any magnetic properties, but, because of it's electrical conductivity, magnets moving across it, tend to create counter EMF properties. (If you slide a stack of NIB magnets down an aluminum pipe, it moves REAL slowly.)
