Hi All


I'm looking for some info on replacement bearing set for the 10e machine I'm restoring. I have spoken to a couple different bearing suppliers (in Australia) and most tell me they are not available then try to sell me generic bearings that i will need to make spacers for. One supplier has been able to find them but at a cost that i was shocked to hear. They quoted me $40 each Is there a good supplier in USA i can purchase these from? There is some for sale on ebay, are these acceptable?

I'm also hoping to find a jointer for my machine, it has the correct headrest to mount the jointer on. Are these possible to find, or would i be best buying a later model one and adapting it to fit?

I am anxiously waiting to hear from the 10e folks on this one. Is there something special (different) about bearings used in the 10e. I always thought bearings were bearings.

Inside bore, outside diameter and thickness, shielded or unshielded.

For a home wood working machine, what else is there?

Trry VXB bearings on the internet. They have a search function where you can plug in the ID, OD and thickness and the search will come up with the closest match. Shipping to Australia may be problem. http://WWW.VXB.com

It might be expensive but it is certainly available. I just Goggled Fedex Australia and got a response that indicates availability.

Skip at MKCtools is your answer. He has them and knows how to order them. However, having watched him last Saturday replace a set for me I am glad I let him do it. First off his are around twenty each I believe, you have to ask him, plus installation. A bit trickier then I thought. He has a homemade press and the parts to fit the spindle and bearings without tearing them up or messing up the spindle. Without a doubt Skip is your answer. If it were me and it was I would let Skip replace them and know it was done correctly. No I don't work for Skip but I do keep him in business . He has forgotten more than most of will ever know about these wonderful machines. And yes there is a big difference in bearings and why put in the wrong ones in when the correct ones are just an email or call away ? Yes, there is a difference. But if you know the specifics for the correct bearing, surely they can be ordered from any reputable dealer.

Now when you receive them, if you don't know how to install them and are not properly equipped to do so, that is another story all together.

Here's a video that Skip from MKCtools posted on YouTube. It does a fine job of showing how to replace the spindle bearings.

I couldn't find much information on replacing the drive sleeve bearings, but here's a thread from this forum that discusses how to remove the assembly from the headstock.

My vote is to let Skip do it. It was that video and the precautions he describes is exactly the reason I let him do it. It is too easy to mess up and for that level of investment my money went to Skip. The bearings lasted 60 years and I won't be replacing them the next time it is needed
Now about ordering ask Skip, he has an account for his business is how he gets them. Apparently they are hard to find and hard to order. What most people do is buy cheaper ones and they don't last long. As for my vote and money it goes to Skip !
