Not very earth shattering but I finally finished my Shopsmith mallet and I also bought a nice big ol' one at an antique store:

This is a photo of the my four mallets. Starting from the left we have a vintage/antique yarn spool of some sort - sort of hooky but it works. Next to it is the remnants of a baseball bat that I turned on the lathe. Boy, that was a 20 year old hunk of ash and it was hard as all get out and tough to turn. I gave up when it got to the state shown.

The 3rd from the left is my new 'real antique' mallet - probably maple or some other hard wood. The classic mallet with a removable handle with a wedge form.Works great - head is banged up and needs some cleanup. Handle is too long and too skinny.

Finally the Shopsmith mallet kit - finished but not very well done. But at least it is done!! I think the handle (1" dowel) is too skinny. My drilling job through the head - less than perfect. But (did I mention??)it is DONE!!! Only took 10 years.

Congratulations on a finished project. I made my mallet 20 years ago using dull hand-tools on hard sycamore. It looks like it was made by Fred Flintstone after he had a few too many beers. But it's been great for chopping out mortices, and I love using it every time.

Thanks, Dave. Now I am going to build a few more mallets! They are very handy.
