This is my latest endeavor. It is a combination of segmented and solid stock using padauk, Peruvian walnut and maple with brass inlay. It is 20 inches tall and was turned rough in three pieces then joined for the final turning. It is a wedding present for friends who are having a traditional Indian wedding.

Question: Did you turn down the brass inlays along with the wood? If so, what kind of lathe tool did you use? HSS? Carbide? Any problem with catches?

The brass inlay was done by cutting segments of 1/4 inch brass pipe, inserting Padauk into the centers and then using epoxy to glue them into each walnut segment. As far as turning goes I use HSS chisels. They are the usual Shopsmith chisels. Brass turns very nicely with the wood. I use the scraping technique with no issues. Our friends are from India and I wanted the wedding present to be in the Indian (from India) motif. I looked at Indian pottery on line and settled on that design.

Very nice! Did you have to turn thin dowels of padauk to use in filling the brass tubing?

No what I did was cut the Paduak into small square stock that was just slightly larger then the ID of the brass pipe and then drove it down through the pipe with a mallet. The brass pipe sheared it off as it was driven down through it.
