I purchased a used shopsmith planner. I had the knives sharpened. I checked the table alignment and then installed the knives and aligned. It still is burning up hardwoods and pealing off the grain of soft woods. Anyone have some suggesting of what my problem may be. Here are a few pics of wood after I have run them through.

I would rather see a couple pictures (not quite so close up) of the blades to make certain that they are installed correctly. In the one image, it sorta looks like they are in backward making them try to perform like a scraper rather than a cutting edge.

the long side of the knife is up against wedge that holds it in and the short side against the head. By the way I was stationed on a sac base back in the day.

ok after reading your comment about looks like i am scraping not cutting made me have a closer look. My lack of experience with the planer made me assume that with the planer mounted on the shop smith that all the controls would be in front of me well I was wrong. I have the planer mounted on the wrong side of the motor so the head was running the wrong direction. I havent went to the trouble to move it over yet but will later this afternoon and give it a try. Thanks for your observation

A reasonable assumption. Unfortunately also wrong.

With a Mark 5/V(non power pro motor) the planer does indeed mount to the 'left' of the headstock, and is driven by the upper drive hub at the 'rear' of the headstock.

Because this places the infeed at the backside of the Mark 5/V, the control box is added to the planer. That allows plugging the SS into the planer control box and thus be able to start/stop the ss from the back side('normal' power switch is left on).

I suggest you obtain a copy of the manual for the planer.

P.S. The power pro can run 'backwards' so it mounts the planer to the right etc. A much better situation!!! And a good excuse to get a Mark VII.

Now we know how to make boards 'fuzzy'.

You've got the blades in correctly so my observations were invalid but I am pleased that you have resolved your problem.

I ordered a manual just havent received it. I didnt relize you could plug in to the control either I will do that as thanks for the reply

I spend by SAC tour in SACCS for the Titan II, not on a launch control team. I later returned to Tucson, where I retired, for a tour of duty with TAC. This tour I was the Maintenance Superintendent for the communications squadron here.

I was attached to a sac command but was a member of a communications squadron as well I spent my active duty time at Grissom as an air traffic radar technician

thanks guys for the help moved the planer to the other side of the drive motor and what do you know works like a champ.
