I've been reading all through here and can't seem to find any information on this noise coming from the drive shaft of the motor. I'm pretty sure I need to replace the bearings but am experienced enough to know when I need some more information before I start.

Can anyone offer me any advice on where to start and how to properly get to the bearings to replace them?

First, you will need a bearing press. The bearings are a tight fit to the shaft.

Second you will have to remove the floating sheave tensioning spring.

If neither of those things are problem some, we can help you through it.

In the saw dust session Nick shows how to remove the spring(be aware there are three versions of parts).

Thanks, yeah neither of those would really be a problem as I can get my hands any tools I need. Question though, to get the new bearings on can you heat them up in order to get them on or do they need to be pressed?

What kind of noise? What year is your SS? When was the last maintenance done?

NO HEAT!

Press off/on.

Here is a Mark VII disassembly, but a Mark 5/V would be very similar. Also there are differing details with different manufacturers.

The Emerson motor has different size bearings in the front/rear.


Beeg raises the question(indirectly) regarding both source of noise and possible lack of lubrication.

I suggest removing the motor belt to determine if the motor is really the source of the noise. Set speed control to fast first. Be aware to not adjust the speed control towards slow without the pulleys rotating, preferably manually.

Ok according to the Shopsmith site my machine dates to between 1981 and 1982. I bought it recently used and oiled everything when I got it home. The speed increases and decreases easily. With it being thirty years old I was just thinking of going ahead and replacing the bearings all around just to be safe.
The noise is a whirring noise and I've been able to loosen the belt and just spin the drive spindle coming out of the motor. The idler and quill turn easily and with little to no noise.
Thanks for any help. I'm wanting to make this my main lathe for turning chair legs and bowls so I want to get it running smoothly.

This thread was started by a question regarding "motor noise' and we have discussed everything but.

Take the belt off of the motor and then turn the motor on (none of ther other moving parts in the headstock will be moving). If the motor is noisy, that will be apparent. The motors normally run almost whisper quiet. Everything else on the drive train is what 'makes noise'.
