Shopsmith Maintenance

I have a Mark V that I have had for 20 years. It's my wife's fault really. We saw a demonstration at the mall and I was intrigued and said, man I'd like to have one of those, and she said, "Get One"! Of course they were happy to finance it (and the planer, band saw, and dust collector).

It has pretty low usage. I got the bug at about 30 and the wife and I took some woodworking classes back then. I built some things for the house (bookshelves, fireplace wood box, computer deck, coffee table, etc) but as the kids hit the busy years of running them around the woodworking stuff started collecting dust and basically has been used very sporadically over the last 15 years. I think I fired up the motor as a table saw a few years ago but that has been the last time. Well, we're recently empty nesters and it's time to dust things off.

Given really low mileage but long timespan what would you guys say are the "must do's" before I start using it again.

Any chance the main belt is ok? I don't think I've done any maintenance inside the main casing ever.

Oil it! (The shafts, not the belt!) Don't skimp. If the belt seems fine just go with it.

Or I guess I could just wait 3 years again and then ask again... ;-)

Thanks Beeg.

Very timely post. My Mark V needs a tuneup and here I find someone else looking. I will be a follower here.

Do not follow him, or you will not get it done for at least another three years! :D
