I'm helping a friend with his older (1960's)Mark VII. The flat washer type bearing between the aluminum motor case head and the belt clutch is worn very thin, and has let the belt clutch rub the motor. Here's my question-is that flat washer type bearing the only thing that is supposed to be in there? I can easily polish the case and belt clutch and put a new/thicker washer in there, but want to make sure that's all that needs to be in that space. It's obvious that someone else was in there at some point, so anything goes...

No washer, it should be a sleeve. It bears against the inner race of the bearing and presses against the inside end of the fan sheave hub. It has va nasty habit of becoming embedded into the softer aluminum hub. I fixed mine by placing a retaining clip between the sleeve and the hub.
