Turning - Universal Tool Rest

I've been turning for a few years now and love it. Mostly using whatever wood i can find; lately its been sugar maple.
I have all the hardware for the shopsmith universal tool rest including the 3 specialty tool rests. The only problem is, I'm missing the cast iron support base and support arm.
Anyone think one could be build out of hard wood or possibly fabricated using steel?
