Some time ago I made a dedicated drill press and stuffed it between two piles of junk. This makes it difficult to raise or lower the Power Head. I have been grabbing whatever was handy placing it under the Quill and using the Quill to raise or lower the head. Today I decided to make a head lift assist fixture. The pictures show raising or lowering the head using the fixture by extending or retracting the quill.

Interesting approach!

Raising and lowering the table would also work.

I think your method is easier, but requires the 'steps'.

I assume you rarely(if at all) move the table up/down.
