Drilling holes with a chuck

I was watching "The American Woodshop" on PBS this morning and Scott Phillips was using a Forstner bit to drill a hole into a blank held by a chuck. He advanced the bit by turning the ram on the tailstock into the blank while the chuck was stationary, What is the procedure to do this on the Shopsmith?

You need the tailstock chuck arbor.

The drill chuck mounts to it and goes in the tailstock and remains stationary. You use the quill to advance the chuck-mounted work piece into the drill bit.

Like this. But in this case I had to drill 18" deep.

Hind sight fer sure, but If I ever make something like that, I likely will turn the spigot on a square(at least two 'normal' edges) blank, drill the interior with the SS in horizontal boring mode, then make a plug for the tailstock end and do the spindle turning. Maybe a plug for the chuck end as well.
Wishful 'thinking' perhaps.
