Yesterday while waiting on a part, I noticed the cool blocks on my band saw were pretty well used up. I decided to make some replacements and save a couple of bucks. Just thought I would pass it along.

Been using oak in mine. Soaked lengths of the sized stock in used motor oil for a week.
they work just fine.

Remember the original ones were steel. I would think anything softer would work well.

Pricing/Availability: Trade of Lignum Vitae is restricted in CITES Appendix II, and prices for genuine Lignum Vitae are accordingly very high: and usually from questionable sources. Lignum Vitae is typically sold by the pound, (instead of the more common board-foot measurement), and since it is the heaviest wood in the world, this also makes it considerably expensive.

'Fresh' trees are not the only source. Salvage is one source. That and the 'Argentine LV' that is less endangered.

I got mine by purchasing bottle stopper blanks(and the first ones on e-bay supposedly salvaged from a ship bearing).

Hard is the correct adjective!
