Abasive Cleanng Stick aka Big Rubber Eraser

Does the "Big Rubber Eraser", 753523, (used to clean sanding disks and belts) have a shelf life?
I have been using mine for many years and have always been impressed with how well it worked. All of a sudden, it doesn't work so good any more. It sorta peels off and gums up and does very little to clean the 120 grit sanding belt that is currently mounted

Heat probably got to it. But then, it gets hot when it's used so, maybe not
Age maybe. Mine's several years old and still good....at least the last time I used it.
Like us all, when it gets old it may become less useful for it's intended purpose.

Mine is at least 10 years old and works well except when cleaning discs or belts that have been used on pine or fir (2 by 4s and such) that are still high in moisture content. Then I get the gummed up pieces sticking to the disc/belt. I just let it dry for a few hours and then brush it off.

Old pencil erasers stop working for whatever reason. Maybe the same condition afflicts the Big Rubber Eraser?

Scrape off the coating and they work fine.

A handy tip. I stopped using those abrasive cleaner sticks years ago. Try using old flip flops. They work amazing.

My personal flip-flops cannot be used for that purpose. I bought a good pair in Tahiti 26 years ago on my honeymoon, and still use them regularly. Which means that the honeymoon ain't over yet.
The soles keep getting thinner as the years pass, but I am bound and determined to see if they will last as long as me and/or my marriage!
I will however, most definitely steal a pair from one of my kids, and give it a shot.

When there are none left in the closet my wife picks up a pair at the 99 cent store.

I tried the flipflop trick. Fell over twice and got a nasty abrasion on my big toe. Back to the big rubber stick.

You can save the heated up parts of the stick as long as you quickly pull the gum off and roll it into a ball. Dow this with the next gum and quickly attach it to the last ball. Before you know it, you will have a ball about an inch or more in diameter that you can use as a pencil eraser.
