The oft talked about jointing technique for boards wider than your jointer really did work for me. I have part of a 10/4 rough cut cherry.

being brought home: I bandsawed the outer rift-sawn sides for legs. I was left with one board 8 inches wide, 2 ½ inches thick and 60 inches long, and another 5 inches wide, 2 ½ inches thick and 60 inches long.

8" piece on the jointer: 5" piece was done the same way.

I made about 5 passes alternating each end before I had a flat enough surface to run through the planer. When I got done, the two ends of each board (inside the minor snipes) were within 1/128 inch of each other.

Final rough cut 'table' getting use to my shop: Right now everything is around 6% moisture content and has not changed much in the last 3 days. I am going to give them a week before final milling.

I think that the board had been in the Ganahl Anaheim warehouse for several years.

That's great. I'd read about it but had absolutely no faith it could work. Curious, though: would a planer sled be a safer bet? Oh, maybe not, you'd need a very LONG planer sled. So - what to do when it is wider than 8"? (Not a snarky question - same thing would come up with any jointer width at some point).

WIdth aside, that's a pretty long/heavy board for a 28" jointer. How did you deal with that? I do see a roller stand on the outfeed side.

I not sure that I would try too much wider. The width of the planer infeed side (widest) would have to be tested for the board falling off the side of the jointer. if it is 'sideways stable' I assume that if you made a jack plane cut down the middle ridge between passes it should work. I do, however, have another setup that uses my handheld router for wider boards.

Yes, both the infeed and outfeed had heavy duty roller stands carefully adjusted to the height of the tables. I haven't weighed the 8" board, but I have no problem lifting and turning it so it can't be more than 40 or 50 pounds.

Unfortunately, I am going to have to trim that beautiful 8" board to 5 ¾" so it will fit my bandsaw for re-sawing. I may look up Nick's way to slightly raise that height.

edit: JPG is correct about using a plane, but I am too old and weak to do that again. That's the way I flattened boards for my workbench, but that was 40 years ago. So I know the effort required!

editPS: Actually, the throat raising of the bandsaw was Drew, not Nick, although I am sure that Nick was involved. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2muM2mgnSZM] I looked at where he recommended cutting and am mid-way through the process. I think that I am going to 'push the envelope' (at the risk of having to buy spare parts) and cut a bit more off. I believe that SS was being conservative from a liability standpoint. I will try to post pictures and results.

Nicely done Forrest. I have heard of but never tried that technique. For long wide stuff I usually use a router sled and the workbench. Next time I may give that a try.
