I had a friend drop by today with a project that involves making several wood dowels out of some very interesting wood. He has no idea what species it is so I thought I would post some pictures and see what you all think. Very beautiful wood and very dense. The challenge is that they all have to be reasonably accurate to each other in diameter. So I spent the day making a router duplicator for the SS which turned out pretty well. The test piece is within .01" from end to end. After routing the blank I used an abrasive block again using the router copier guide to guide the sanding block along the dowel for the finished product. The test piece was DF and therefore soft. The wood my friend brought is extremely hard so it will be slow going with the copier.

Could you not have done the same thing using the lathe? Just curious ....

Kinda looks like Zebra wood, which is very dense, hard, and has a bit of an oily feel to it do to its density and small pores.

Zebrawood's grain isn't that "squirrelly" in my experience. I would guess olive. Nice stuff whatever it it.

Some parts of that blank resemble Koa wood I've used, but I'm not totally sure. Koa isn't very heavy compared to some exotics. Very cool fixture you've developed!

I have never dealt with olive. Is olive that dense ? This stuff is pretty dense.
