Inspired by masonsailer2's tablet case http://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/viewt ... et#p180303, I decided to make a couple of Nook (Barns and

Nobel Ereader) cases for my wife and myself.

I made Laura's by squaring up a piece of stock, cutting off the top for the "plug" closer.

I then re-sawed the remainder and routed out the interior. Once that was done,

I lined it with felt and glued the two "halves" back together, and then sanded the

pillow shape on the belt sander and the inflatable SS drum sander.

Sorry I didn't take pictures of the making of this one, was in a kind of tunnel vision

gettin' her done ...
I inlaid her "brand" by freehand drawing the pattern onto the wood and routing a shallow groove following the pattern, and then cutting out a piece of Chinese Lilac (a local mahogany) from a tree that was in our garden for decades that fit the groove. It is my first inlay ....

It turned out too arts and craft in my mind, but it works.



My second one was more following Masonsailers2 technique by cutting a long piece of

stock with a tenon running it's whole length. I then cut the sides to length, trued the

length and squared with the disk sander and trued the "square" with the conical disk

(what an amazing device that is ).

Very nice job Dick. We may have started something. I travel a lot ( am on a flight to Denver as I write this) and everywhere I go and pull out my tablet people ask where I bought the case. I feel like telling them "it's easy, just fork out a few grand for a Shopsmith and the rest is easy. " I have one issue with mine which is holding the lid on. Thinking about adding a brass pin on the side which would go through the case and into the lid to secure it. Possibly a small brass pin with a ring attached. Anyone have a source for that ?

Thanks Paul, the lids are pretty tight right now, but I can see where they could loosen. I am going to "paint" a thin coat of the plastic dip stuff for a better hold and longevity if they become loose. You might try that ....

Any room to inlay a small magnet to hold the lid on?

Thanks for the ideas. The ball catch might work. The spacing would be very tight but it might fit. I am still leaning toward a pin as it would be a positive locking device. The problem is that it is for a Surface Pro tablet which is fairly heavy and I am afraid if I pick it up by the wrong end it will dislodge the cap and come sliding out. They have lots of stainless pins at the chandlery by the boat but I am going to hold out for a brass pin with a circular brass wire pull.

Nice! I love my nook but still feel reading should involve dead trees in some way, not just plastic and metal. Your case puts soul back in the equation.

I have to admit I made a super ugly handle for my nook that I got glued to the back (with masking tape on the nook). I wanted to see if I liked it before making a nice one, but it for my hand so well that I never replaced it... even when I replaced the nook, and again, and again... I think 5 nooks total, same ugly scrap wood handle.

Hmmm, maybe I need to make a case so it survives the next time a wolfhound stomps on it, or I step on it, or goes camping and tries to get grit in the sensors...
