Hello. I have a 1956 mark V that the speed change controller came loose on while I was using it. I retightened the set screw, but needless to say my speed is now off! I was doing some online research trying to figure out how to reset this thing and found reference on the Shopsmith site (Maintenance and troubleshooting section of the Mark V manual) to hooking up a tachometer to the headstock in order to set the max speed to 5200RPM. Can anyone tell me how I would go about hooking a tach up to my machine in order to perform this procedure? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

to check the speed on my SS 510 I used my disk sander with a digital laser tachometer.
I put the reflective tape on the back side of the disk sander.
You can also use a faceplate.

got my digital laser tachometer off e-bay for under $15 shipped a couple years back.

I'll have to reread that pamphlet myself.

I have a digital hall sensor tach on the wau, $12, free shipping off ebay. Laser TACHS are about the same and would likely be better since you may not want it mounted in place. There are also contact TACHS (phone insists on capitulating. Bah! Phone is a cheese eating surrender monkey! No, I said phone insists on capitalizing that.) Those you press against the shaft. Do, there are options. It is taking a couple weeks for mine to arrive from ebay, china., so you may want to find a local with one.

If you add your location to your profile there may be someone with one, never know
