In September of last year , I received the 556442 10-Position Quick-index Quill Handle 3-piece Set and found it very useful to move the handle out of the way for certain operations.

After a couple of months, I found that the Rare Earth Magnet in the 523071 Handle was coming stuck to the mating 5230701 Hub Adapter.

I pressed it back in and went back to work. Well, the magnet has come out several times. I have tried staking it in but either did a poor stake job or it won't work.

I talked to SS and they said that the magnet is super-glued in so I will try that next time it comes out. Personally, I think the design (don't get me wrong, I LIKE the Handle) is fighting an uphill battle since the Handle is aluminum and the Hub is steel. Guess which one wins the tug of war.

SS is sending me a new Handle and asked that I send the old one back which I will do. They also said that mine was the first call on the issue that they have received.

Hopefully, my original one was defective for some reason and that later shipments were better.

I love my 10 position quill handle. It has come in really helpful when adjusting for new drilling positions. Some horizontal, some vertical.

If the magnet comes loose, I'll know who to call.

I had the black handle on the standard piece (not the 10 position upgrade) come loose from the shaft after moderate pressure. A bit disappointed with that but just took some epoxy to reassemble. It appeared that no glue and been used initially. Maybe "the glue guy" at Shopsmith has been scrimping on the adhesives!

I've been examining their (SS's) design and I think it would be better served if there was something to help push the pieces apart. Maybe something like a metal dowel/pin with a button head in the center which you could press with your thumb while pulling the handle off??!!??

Yes, I know the instructions are to NOT pull the handle or shaft , but ease of use seems to negate that directive. Maybe with the button it would be grasped like a hypodermic plunger action.

Shucks, Ben, I re-invent the wheel all the time!

I have decided that if my 'new' 10-position Handle fails, I am going to give the Hub some competition for the magnet:

I will drill and tap through the magnet hole to the outside surface for a large diameter steel panhead machine screw cut to contact the magnet.

And a drop of epoxy down the magnet hole when pressing in the magnet (for the last time ).

Not the prettiest fix, but it's my fix so I will just love it.
