Greetings,

I am a new Shopsmith owner (well almost) and new to this forum. Over the weekend I purchased a new Mark 7. While I am waiting for my machine to be built, I've been looking for used accessories and found a Pro Planer model 514300, serial number 111691. From the description and pictures, it appears to be in excellent condition. The asking price is $600. By the way, I live in the Seattle area. It comes with casters, upgraded pulleys and intake roller, and dust chute. The only negative the seller mentioned was that the knives may need sharpening, but that is easy to resolve.

I've done some research and found that prices vary. So, does $600 sound like a good deal or a little pricey?

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know the Seattle market, but I've been following them here in Central Ohio for two or three years. They tend to be listed on Craigslist initially for about $500, and the price usually drifts down to about $400 before they sell. If you can afford to be patient, they pop up once or twice a year for $200 to $300, in which case you'd better buy them real quick.

I've been very pleased with mine, by the way.

Well I paid $700 for mine, and it came with a set of brand new replacement blades. I've been very happy with my purchase so far. Just be sure the table adjustment screws are not bent and the table cranks up and down level.

I would recommend that you avoid buying one that needs to be shipped if you can. The ProPlaner is heavy and difficult to prepare for shipping in such a way that it will be adequately protected. Like Fred has reported, the table adjustment screws are vulnerable.

Just bought one here in east TN for $400. Had it originally priced at $450, but he came down a little. It's on casters (home-made base) and has the dust chute.

If it is on a home made base it is not a Pro Planer. It is a SS mounted planer that someone made a base for. The Pro Planer came from SS with its own stand and a 1 3/4 HP motor. The Pro Planer has a cast iron table and the SS mounted planer has an aluminum table. Not a real big difference since they both work great.
