Shopsmith Mark V Model 510 or 520 w/Slider

I have been thinking about resurrecting my Model 510 with what sorta amounts to a "Slider Table". I used the slider configuration for quite a while when I was cutting a bunch of miters of varying degrees. It worked very well. You must pay attention during setup but once done with that detail, it is very accurate and repeatable.

I you had one of these, do you believe that it would get a work out.

These are not my photo images and the machine featured here is not mine. It belongs to another member of this forum. If you like this option, he may contact you as the design is his.

I'd have to try it. The two questions/concerns I'd have are:

What is the capacity (width) that can be cross cut with this set up?

How long does it take to set up and align with each use?

I only used this configuration for a while but I can say that it has at least the same capacity as any other 510/520. To give you a specific answer, I'll have to get a system set back up so that I can measure it.

If extreme accuracy is not required, it sets up very quickly; at least as fast as with a Shopsmith miter gauge. For more accurate setups, I would have to recommend some sort of digital angle gauge be used.

I'd hope it has much greater capacity than using a standard miter gauge; otherwise, what's the point?

That intrigued me the first time I saw it. But now, I'd prefer a good radial arm saw for cross-cutting. I have two Dewalt's, the bigger one has 3hp, a 14" blade, and a 24" crosscut capacity.

I answered "No, I probably already have that utility". However it is very intriguing. If I were just starting out with my Shopsmith, I would be very interested. Not knowing the price would hold me back.

In my shop, all tools must perform a function that offsets the cost.

I would like to be able to say that but I have a number of tools that now serve no useful purpose or no purpose that could not be done using a different tool that is also in my shop. Where tools are concerned, I could be considered an impulse buyer.

Like most 'pols' I encounter, the available answers are usually too restrictive to allow an accurate answer.

I would use it if practical etc.

How much would be determined by future need.

My 'opinion' is it can be useful.

The number of responses is not great but I believe that I can conclude that there would be NO RUSH TO PURCHASE.

When I first posted this, I intended to remount mine and do a better presentation of the sled. I will have to do that later. I discovered that I have packed part of this sled away where I can not get to it without moving a much of heavy boxes. I apologize for this .

Yes, JPG, there is always some room for improving the poll questions. If you had done this poll, what questions would you have asked?
