Hi Folks,

I have three questions. First, With my 10ER in drill press mode, I can push the drill chuck up approx. 1/8". I removed the chuck and the gauge rod collar and can see the spindle bearing slide up and down in the quill tube as I push up on the chuck? Any way to fix this???

Second, I'm in the process of restoring a second 10ER and have found the following letter and number "Q-1" on the headstock, carriage, base plate etc... Does anyone know what "Q-1 stands for?

Third, I was looking at another post here and someone was talking about "Wall Mounting" a 10ER. I've been thinking about doing this and want to know if anyone has any pictures to show how this will look?

Greetings.
First: The quill bearing is a press fit on the shaft and a slip fit in the quill so what you are observing is normal.
The end play is taken up by the gauge collar pressing the outer bearing race into the seat in the quill.
I had a similar problem a couple of months ago, I was getting a lot of end play (at least a quarter inch) and thought it was a problem with the bearings.
It turned out the gauge collar wasn't seated properly. (You can see the marks from the set screws just outboard of the groove.)
When I re-installed the gauge collar with the set screws seated properly all the end play was gone. While I was up in the shop taking that picture I decided to check my other 10ER (drill press) and found it had a bit of end play, about what you describe.
When I removed the gauge collar I was surprised to find that the end of the quill was straight and did not have the groove. So apparently there are at least two quill designs. Re-installing the gauge collar removed all but a very minimal amount of end end play on this one as well.
I found the trick to getting it adjusted properly is to extend the quill an inch or so and lock it there. Then push the gauge collar tight against the end of the quill and tighten the set screws.

Third: Wall mounting does not appeal to me, I would be concerned about noise transferring to the wall and difficulty moving it if the need arose.
The 10ER I have as a dedicated drill press is mounted on a cut down bench that stands on the floor.

Thanks Ron! I was fairly sure I had the quill partially extended before I installed the gauge collar however, I'm going to double check it.
