All,

As i begin the restoration of my Grandpap's 10 ER, the only broken part is this piece shown for the speed controller. if anyone has one for sal or knows where i can get one i would be really appreciative.

Hi Eric

It is great that you have the speed changer , it was an optional accessory and is desirable.
That said, where yours is broken is the part that is most likely to break, so a replacement part will be hard to find.

The good news is that it can be repaired. You will need to find someone with the equipment and expertise to weld aluminum.

Too avoid future damage, only change the speed when the motor is running, and do not adjust past the point where the springs start to compress.
Also leave a bit of slack where the speed changer attaches to the headstock.

Thank you for the reply!! Ok, so the piece is aluminum? i havent taken it that far apart yet, and it was like than when i got it. i will find someone who weld aluminum, and get it repaired. Thank you again for the assistance.

The pix reveals more! Notice the two springs. the one to the left is 'open' while the one to the right is fully? compressed. It is the bottoming out of the springs that cause the ear to break. Those springs are there to allow the advancing screw to not exert excessive force on the ear and allow the sheaves to 'catchup'. So adjust slowly(either direction).

You are fortunate it is not broken off completely. Good luck with the
welding!!!

Took another look. Interesting 'work around'. The ear may indeed be broken completely off.

Do not be alarmed if the welder grinds a 'V' at the crack. That allows greater penetration and room for the fillet.


P.S. Is the indicator plate indicating from 0 to 5 or 0 to 8?

They are not real common but they do show up on eBay from time to time. Sometimes they are welded so if you buy a replacement make sure it is not welded. Typical price for an undamaged one on eBay is $150. As has been said, as long as you can find someone with the proper equipment yours can be welded.

Welding aluminum requires some special skills and equipment. When you find someone who "can do it for you", don't be surprised at the cost. Select your welder carefully. Many "welders" think and say they can weld aluminum. I happen to know one of those welders. He is great on heavy equipment. Aluminum is another thing all together.

Good point!! Heliarc/TIG etc. should be part of his vocabulary and tool chest.

I am very fortunate that i work with some of the top welders in the industry. We make tractors and attachments for the golf and special turf industries. Our number one fabricator, who makes all of our jigs and fixtures for robots also does aluminum welding repairs. So all its costing me is a subway sandwich...lol Thank you again for all of the advice and directions. More stupid questions and info requests to follow as the main restoration gets underway!!!
