Restoring 10ER S/N 83974

I have finally started to restore the first of the four 10ER's I have here. This one is from 1952 according to Skip's list and has thin wall way tubes and hollow table posts. I have another 1952 S/N 69356 that has thick wall way tubesand solid table posts.

Anyhow here are some before pictures. I started on some of the smaller parts and don't have before pictures of them but the last picture is of the finished product.

OK, the green and silver really looks nice but I am a die hard traditionalist. Maybe one of the other three will get a different treatment but don't hold your breath.

Got some time this afternoon in the shop after spending most of the morning at the clinic on Hill AFB. My wife had an eye and a routine medical appointment.

I polished the main table tubes. They had light rust on them which I removed in the media blaster with 70/80 grit glass media.

The first picture is the tube after blasting. It is mounted on the SS with a 3/4" SS sanding drum mandrel and a tapered wood plug with a live center. I used 400 and then 600 grit wet/dry paper to polish the tubes.

The second picture shows the result.

Looks Awesome, I am just starting to restore one I inherited from my Dad about 30 years ago. Still runs, but I want to shine it up and put some fresh bearings in it. I am looking for anyone in the Denver area that has a shopsmith that I could hook the main tubes in to spin them up for a good emery cloth cleaning/polishing. Are you using paste wax to preserve the finish after the polishing? or something else?

I use paste wax and always have.That is what SS has always recommended so why change?

The first picture shows more parts media blasted and ready for paint and/or polishing. The second picture is the finished product. The paint is one coat of primer and then two coats of the finish color.

Here we have more parts glass blasted and primed. Then one way tube cleaned and polished. I used 220 through 600 grit paper on the tube.
