Computer Issue

I’m hoping someone with more knowledge of computers can help here. I have a pc running Windows 7. Last night there was a message I get from time to time about needing to install “Important Updates”. I always click okay to these and then sometime later there is a message that “Configuring Windows - Don’t Turn Off The Power”. Then after a while the desktop magically appears.
This morning that didn’t happen. After the “Configuring Windows - Don’t Turn Off The Power” the desktop never appeared, no text of any kind just the swoopy background background screen.
What should I do? Thanks for reading and any assistance.

My near son-in-law called and said unplug the unit, wait 10 seconds, re-plug, and fire it up. I did and it went through the usual start-up routine and everything looked okeydokey. I’m running a system scan now.

I hesitate to load the automatic updates. When I get an update notice I go to the website in question, (Microsoft, Open Office)
and check for updates directly from the site. There are scammers that try to load spyware by imitating known sites. You may want to run a complete virus scan of the computer to see if there are any embedded worms that can cause problems.

berry, I too have enabled automatic updates and I have had no serious issues arise out of having done so. What you describe has also happened to me. If anything at all disrupts your computer while these updates are in process, it hangs without completing the process.
As long as your system came up this morning, I would suggest that you have nothing to be concerned about.
I would, as has already been recommended, run a complete security scan but only after checking again for the existence of pending updates. The updates that were to have been loaded last night may not have happened.
