My wife and I are moving to a larger house so yesterday was the beginning of the move. Started moving the shop first. What a chore. One more load today and the shop will be complete and then we will start on the house. I get a three car garage out of the deal so that takes a little pain out of it. The startling thing is the amount of residual sawdust. I think I just learned a lesson. On the surface my shop was pretty clean but after everything was moved out there was a lot of dust. It had been a while since I used compressed air and the leaf blower. More diligence is in order. The new house has the water heater and furnace in the garage so that will dictate better dust control for safety.

IF they are gassed fired with open combustion chambers you better pay attention to dust or you may come out of the shop with no eye brows.

Use your dust collector religiously and I do not believe you will have the sort of dust that causes what you are worried about. Do all of the heavy dust creation as far from the furnace and water heater as possible. Do not work with the garage doors closed.

After you have moved in and have the shop set up as you intend it to be, visit your nearest fire station and discuss your concerns with them. I believe you will find someone there who is more than willing to visit you in your shop and assess the fire danger.

I would expect them to tell you to build the water heater and furnace into a utility compartment (enclose them) and vent that compartment to the outside.
