Does this same nylon insert have (what appears to be) a split, in its circumference. Is this built in, or is this nylon insert, damaged?

Please advise!

So can this be replaced? And if so, does SS sell replacement parts? Do they also include, instructions on removal and re-installation?

I assume that you are referring to part #514083, If so it is available for $7.64 ad should have no cracks or splits

Just a quick addition. If that part is actually cracked please post a picture of it. I have never seen a broken one!!!

Will do, once I get the new part.
For the time being, I just make darned sure that the top 5mm Allen set screw is tightened down. Further more, no drill press mode!

How did I discover this, you might ask!
The last time I had my Mark V in the drill press mode, my quill came flying out and luckily, it landed on a fresh pile of saw dust/shavings.

Yes, it went through my table, as I had the insert out. I was about to do, drum sanding!

The quill shaft is secured into the quill by a retaining ring.

The quill is prevented from coming out of the headstock by a half dog setscrew on the top of the headstock that rides in a blind keyway groove on the quill that also prevents the quill from rotating.
