Plane iron sharpening

Before honing the bevel, I like to be sure that the back side is flat and polished as many have advised. I attach a 6" rule to the back side so that I only have to polish a small area instead of the whole back. (Different story with chisels, though)
To try to re-polish only the same area each time that I re-hone, I have scribed lines on the front side where the rule should be. I have filled in the carbide scribe lines with red ink so they show in the picture.
