The 10ER tie bar has a threaded hole in to above the slot for the locking knob. What is it for? I must be missing something. Nothing I have seen uses it.

When you attach the tailstock/aux table on that end, how is it 'secured'?

A similar hole exists at the hinge end.

That is true and that is what I thought. However, if you set the tie bar per 10ER specs (I think) the tail stock will not fit completely on. There is nothing in any of the docs that show that. I have an original 10E preliminarily manual from before the production manual was released.

My manual (10E) does not mention the position of the tiebar from the end of the way tubes. It assumes factory positioned when shipped.

That said, I think the proper distance from the end of the way tubes should be the thickness of the tail stock + the thickness of the headrest +1/8" minimum.

Guys, I've always used 1/2 the thickness of the tailstock, to set my distances.

You all know, that the clearances of the tailstock to the way tubes, is quite
tight, and with the knob holding together, there won't be any issues.

Besides, I pick up another 1.5 inches of spindle turning room.

(On a dedicated lathe, no extra room at the left end, and the 1/2
tailstock room at the right end. Of course, if I use a 10E tailstock
extension bracket, with a piece of wood attached, for a tool holder,
I may leave 1/4 inch to align everything.)

When I put my 10ER back together I put it into drill press mode and adjusted the projection of the way tubes so that when the ends were resting on the circular pads on the base, the way tubes were perpendicular to the bench. It is easier to do this before the headstock/motor are installed.

With regard to the projection on the headrest end, the 10ER manual does not give a position for the tie bar. In the picture it looks to be about the same as the tail stock end.

See page 4, the section titled Attaching the Headrest and the two paragraphs immediately proceeding.
The headrest was to be located relative to the tie bar position.
