The disc sanding plate on the used Mark V 510 I'd bought needed a little clean up. It had some left over adhesive and a bit of rust.

I used "Oops" to get the adhesive off, worked quite well.

There were spots where there was some rust coming up through the paint.

I used 600 grit wet/dry to clean up the rust, followed by a complete wipe down with "Oops". And not knowing if it leaves a residue, a wipe down with mineral spirits. I didn't pay much attention to the back, I was more concerned with where the sandpaper goes.

Anyway, now, it is entirely smooth, at least as far as my fingertips can tell.

Before I put the velcro conversion disc on it, do I need to do anything about the few little spots where the paint's no longer intact? Will the adhesive from the conversion disc cover it and protect it from corroding again? Should I paint it first? I can't wax it, the adhesive won't hold. Or will it take twenty years to corrode again and who cares

If I paint it, I'm concerned about getting it smooth again. I might have to do a few cycles of paint, sand, paint, sand

I was also wondering if it would be could to put it on the SS and spin it up (low speed) and slowly apply some 600 grit, make certain that there's no wobble or high spots.

First off, the disc is not 'painted'. It is steel black oxide.

You cannot replace the black oxide.

The velcro should prevent further rust.

Let us know how you 'like' the velcro system after you have experience with it.

I am not the OP, but I love the velcro system. I know you need to be aware of the "softness" or give that the velcro supposedly has, but I find the system to work very well, and most importantly you can change grits very quickly.

I know, just another noob with an opinion .....

Haven't used it yet, but I've put the conversion disc on the plate... If you're considering going velcro, and considering buying a plate... Buy the plate with the velcro on it.

It has some serious adhesive, if you don't have it lined up right the first time...good luck getting it off and trying again.

And regarding the paint... I knew it was coated, which means paint or plating, or, if my brain had been working correctly, oxidation. (desirable oxidation for protection, as opposed to undesirable oxidation... i.e. rust) And if the coating is oxidation, it's seriously difficult to re-oxidize it. One would need the correct chemical baths.

Anyway, I've used 600 grit to clean it off, then "Oops", then mineral spirits. Then I applied the disc, starting with one edge, which was not lined up correctly. I then pulled it off... not easy, not even. And applied again more accurately.

I cleaned the back the same way, then applied wax to try to prevent further corrosion.

Next time use a piece of wax paper to keep it from sticking until ya have it aligned.

You know, after a while, you've gathered huge volumes of knowledge... but you can't find it when you need it ;-)

For those of you interested, I really like the Velcro conversion. So easy to swap sand papers. The only thing... the back of the disks have the ... fabric on them, no label as to what it is. I have to just feel... course, medium or fine.
