I'm not sure that foot is the right name but that is what I'm calling it for the purpose of this post.

I'm carrying my miter gauge out to my shopsmith when I hear this metal hitting pavement sound. I look around and there is my foot........... yea it fell off.

It slides back on but will not stay on anymore. Good thing I have spares of things. So another item that I have on my "to be repaired" list.


I've never had this happen before, has anyone else?

I'm thinking a cold chisel and good size hammer should fix it right back up.

Small ball bearing and a big hammer?

I'd call it a defect in workmanship or material and ask for a new one under warranty.

I guess I hadn't thought about it being a defect worthy of getting shopsmith involved. I can not be sure when I purchased this particular one but I know I haven't purchased one in a long while. I was thinking just normal wear, normal as in I use it as it is intended to be used which puts no load to cause it to fail. So I guess you are right it is a defect.

I was thinking of cross peening but JPG's idea of a small ball would be more in line with how it was originally made. I will have to look in my parts drawers to see if I can find an appropriate size and give it a whack. I'm thinking my anvil, the small ball and then sitting the rod with foot on it and hitting the stem......... I have an air impact tool that holds chisels with a similar sized shaft so I could even go that way to see what would happen if the first idea fails.

Busy day doing other things but I did manage to take a few minutes to reattach my foot.

I was going to start going into my drawers in hopes of finding a bearing to use but then thought better of that. It would likely take me at least a half hour of searching to find one and I only had about that long to get this done.

So pulled out the anvil, sat it on the floor then used one of my smaller ball peen hammer to do the reshaping. Two hits and it was done. Yes I even took pictures, well after it was finished and I got the camera and moved to an area to take the pictures but the point is that it was an easy fix and only took a few minutes.
So if it happens to you this is at least one way to fix it.

Way to go, Ed! Proof that some parts can be fixed with a couple of hammers.

Reminds me of back in about '86 my family inherited Grandpa's Cadillac (a '64 I believe). I spent a long few nights taking all the interior trim out so I could fix all 4 power windows. Most of them were fixable, just motor-brush issues. But one of them had the motor-to-window linkages all fallen apart. A missing rivet was the cause. I showed Dad, and he went in the garage and "peened" a new made-from-scratch rivet. I was totally impressed and I love to see peening repairs to this day!!
