In the early 80's Wood magazine had an article on a cedar lined blanket chest with eight raised panels on the front and four raised panels on each end. The panels were raised using a table saw. I actually started to build it in the late 80's. Time has come to finish it but alas I have misplaced the article. I have search Wood magazines archives but they seem to stop at 1984. There were no plans for it just very limited drawings in the article. If I remember it was pretty much just one page that I had saved. Anyone remember that chest or still have the magazine?

Thanks for the reply. That is not it. The one that I started has eight panels on the front. I am using walnut for the panels and ash for contrast. I can't believe that I have misplaced that article along with the "cut list" that I spent a lot of time figuring out. Bob

Do you really need plans? I build everything here from ideas in my head. Start with the outside dimensions you want and work inward. Make the panels and frames to fit the size you want. Doing it that way is actually easier than trying to follow instructions for me.
Here is a walnut cedar lined chest I built 25 years ago using the instructions in my head. Mine has only 3 panels on the front and a single one on each end, but it would be fairly easy to make more or fewer panels depending on what you want.

I searched the Wood Magazine on-line index and got nothing for a chest earlier than the one Joe suggested. Are you sure about the time frame? I tried searching on "cedar chest", "chest", and "blanket chest" and got nothing for earlier than 1986. Have you tried posting the question on their forum?

Thank you. I also searched/looked around their site with no luck. Time frame should indeed be the early 80's as that when Ryobi came out with the first affordable home shop planers. I started the chest with walnut that was from slab firewood and was afraid to proceed thinking it was not dry and might crack. I cut the panels to width and one inch thick and stacked them with stickers. Sometime it the late 90's I planed the panels to 3/4" thick. I am fairly confident that the panels could be used at this stage since none cracked. Last year I had to tear the garage that the shop was in down. I moved the pieces to the new shop but can not find that article or the "cut" list that I had made up. I sure hope to find some info on that chest as almost everything is roughed in close to size. As Gary said I may have to do more figuring. FYI the human brain is much like a computer hard drive as it will only hold so much information. Right now I am near capacity so to make room for daily functions my hard drive/brain randomly deletes information just to survive. It just ain't easy. Bob

The first issue of wood was October 1984
Their first chest issue was October 1986
As best I can tell they did not feature another chest in their fist 50 issues which was published in February 1992.

I was a charter subscriber and have every issue 1- 233 and the wife says they need to go.

Thank you. That certainly explains why I could not find any earlier articles. Time to rethink what magazine I had used. Perhaps it was Fine Woodworking.

Part of the lost is found. A special thank you to Ed in Tampa for making it clear that the time frame did not work. I found a photo copy but not the cut list that I had prepared. Since most of the pieces are already cut it should be easy to figure out. It turns out that it is the May-June 1980 issue of Workbench magazine. If anyone has that issue I might be able to get a better copy. Thanks again for getting me headed in the right direction. Bob
