Band Saw Dust Chute Issue

I am setting up a dust collection system and have an issue connecting a 2 1/2" hose to the dust chute on my SS Band Saw. The chute's diameter seems a few mm too wide for my 2 1/2" dust collector hose to fit over it. The very same hose easily fits onto my SS Lower Table Saw Guard Dust port. What am I missing here? Thanks. Rick

An elbow?

Hmmm...would you elaborate? I know that SS has an elbow and a collar sold as a "dust chute upgrade", but I thought that was designed for older band saws manufactured without a dust chute. ( http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/cata ... tchute.htm ) Thanks. Rick

In my experience the shopsmith dust hose fits INTO the dust chute not over it.

An elbow?

I use a standard DC elbow and 2 1/" hose with a plastic screw on end. The elbow, hose end and hose all came from Woodcraft years ago.

Fittings have 'male' and 'female' ends. The elbow has one each.

Actually they are 2 1/4" id/od. The hose is male(2 1/4" od). The saw guard is female (2 1/4" id[+ a smidgen]). My 'add on' bandsaw port is female.

The elbow allows the hose to exit away from the table etc.

The elbow 'female' end also has a 2 1/2" od and a fixed stop 'ring'.

The saw guard 'female' end has a 2 1/2" od.

If you are slipping the hose 'over' the saw guard port your hose is not the size intended.

However, the female end of an elbow(ss issue) should provide the same od as the saw guard.

I do not have a bandsaw with the molded in adapter cover. If yours is, share with us the id/od of the port.

When using the black dust hoses I also used an elbow from the bandsaw dust port. Since using the "new" clear - more flexible hose, there is no need for an elbow.

That is my experience with both the band saw and the lower saw guard, at least when using Shopsmith supplied dust collection hoses and fittings.

Question for rmbishow: are you using Shopsmith hoses and fittings or some other brand?

I am using a semi-clear 2 1/2" x 8' hose from Woodcraft. The hose does fit (albeit rather snuggly) on the lower saw dust port, but is impossible to fit over the band saw port. If one end of the SS elbow is female and the other is male, that sounds like it might resolve my issue (if the male end is more narrow than the existing band saw port). I would have hoped to avoid a 90 degree angle, as I understand that such angle can reduce the DC efficiency. I wonder if Woodcraft has a straight male/female connector? Might have to check. Thanks all for the thoughtful responses. Rick

Correction: My Woodcraft DC hose is 2 1/2" x 10'.
