I went to the demonstration at the Lowes in Lincoln, Nebraska yesterday. Mike Young did the demo or should I say talk. He did not turn on the machine. He just talked to me since I already own a Mark V 500 which I bought new at a mall in Biloxi, MS in 1980. I think he is getting lazy in his old age. He has forgotten that when people hear the machine running while doing the demo, they hear it from a distance and the curiosity of most people draw them in that direction to want to see what is being done. I have seen him before and now he doesn't demo much of anything if he thinks most watching are current Shopsmith owners. His language can be too familiar at times and on the borderline of a bit salty which I think may turn off some people. He has stopped doing the very basics of what good sales is all about. Shopsmith needs to get some younger people with plenty of energy and enthusiasm to replace the old timers doing the demos. After seeing how beefy and rigid the table system is compared to my current machine, I have decided to get a new Mark 7 rather than do the Power Pro upgrade to my current one. I will buy it next year for cash.

I was a bit disappointed that there are no really good deals being offered on a new Mark 7 at Lowes. You still pay full retail plus shipping and Shopsmith gives you $549 to choose whatever accessories you want. Since I already have all the accessories that Shopsmith makes that does me no good. I will get the 10% military veteran discount from Lowes, though.

Take the accessories offered or barter for a reduction in cost. There is a market for those even though you won't get full retail price. Leave nothing on the table!!!

Unfortunately, unless you are a retired vet, our Lowes will not give the 10% except on certain holidays. They claim it's their national/corporate policy. So, I have to wait for those holidays. Also, I've not seen a demo at our local Lowes as yet.

To get the discount anytime you must be active duty military or a disabled veteran. You just show your military ID card or your VA ID card. All other veterans are limited to the four days you mentioned.

Or a retired vet with no disability. Bottom line is that to get the discount every day you must possess a military ID card (Active, Retired or Dependent) or a VA ID card. To get a VA ID card you must be enrolled in the VA health system. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but to be enrolled in the VA health system you must have a service connected disability and you do not need to be retired. You just have to have served and have a disability.

However, In a recent issue of the Air Force Print News I subscribe to there was an article stating that the VA has been directed to issue Veterans ID cards to all veterans regardless of status. Presumably that card will be different from the enrollee card.

I wonder how that will affect HD and Lowes policy.

Have no guess re: HD or Lowe's.

However, don't count on that card! I was discharged in 1955. All the WWII vets were just finishing college - or running a business. In my day almost every walking man was a vet. That's a lot of vets.

And they (VA) can't even handle all the injured guys.

OK, I agree that is a lot of Vets but this is an administrative process not a medical thing. Also, I presume it will be the veterans job to supply a DD214 to the VA to apply for the card and not the VA's job research the archives and send cards to everyone. I guess we will see as this plays out.
