Shop starting to look like a Harry Potter scene...

Post by robinson46176 »

I leave spiders alone outside but I stay at war with them in the shop. Not much makes a bigger mess than big cobwebs with added sawdust. :(
I haven't gotten in much woodshop time this spring / summer and that includes cleaning. Diana's broken arm really put us behind a few months and all of the rain here in what has become the "Hoosier Rain Forest" this year has really held back much work too.
Mowing has been a big time demand with all of the rain and in some months it has rained so much here that not only is everything growing just silly but it has been hard to work in enough days where it was not raining, to be able to mow or do any outdoor work. Typically Diana does a lot of the mowing but couldn't much of this year. Like many things once you get behind, catching up is nearly impossible. In recent years we have mowed with a couple of 20+ HP 4' lawn tractors but a few weeks ago I bit the bullet and i bought a 27 HP 61" zero-turn to speed things up... It's helping but it is still raining a lot and I am still behind... :)
Most of my shop time has been in the farm shop this summer working on various vehicles. I absolutely must shift some time to the wood shop soon or I will need a machete to get through all of those big dusty webs.
First we are going to "bomb" the whole house (this sentence probably just triggered a homeland security investigation :) ) to get rid of many of the critters. I have never seen so many bugs both inside and out as this year. They have a new kind of bug-bomb out that does not require turning off all of the pilot lights or potential spark making items. I figure it is worth a try...
The humuggety has been so high this year that the AC has literally kept streaming water outside. I need to make provisions to drain it away a bit better.

It's Hot Shot brand. It says "no mess" or something like that. They still have both versions. We use bombs on other buildings more than in the house but this year is "special".
I like to bomb the motor-home about once a year. We also keep a tray of rat & mouse under the sink. I have several grain bins that are now only used for storage and we fight little "critters" in those too.

I saw a new one today... It is Hot-Shot "Bedbug and Flea" bomb. I noticed that it controls some bugs that others don't as well as most of the usual suspects. I did note that it doesn't list spiders...
It said:
"This product controls the following: bedbugs, beetles, boxelder bugs, cockroaches, earwigs, fire ants, fleas (eggs), fleas (larvae), fleas, flies, flying moths, gnats, grain weevils, hornets, lice, millipedes, mosquitoes, Palmetto bugs, pharaoh ants, pillbugs, silverfish, sowbugs, wasps, ticks and yellow jackets".
I do like to rotate from one kind to another.
Plain old Raid house and garden controls a lot of stuff well.
If it is an area where no one sleeps or lives "Yard Guard" hits most things pretty hard and is good in someplace like a barn or big shed.

So what bug-bombs were those? Can you describe the label, please? Sorry, but I'm struggling with bugs too. It seems like they were sleeping all summer and suddenly woke up just a few days ago. I set up traps like this and those are effective at some point, but I want to deal with those as fast as possible. Every evening it's full of roaches, moths and flies.
