Free Windows Upgrade

You can say whatever you might but I have gone and done it.

Yes, I said that I was not going to upgrade but I caved in. If all goes as stated by Microsoft, I will be a Windows 10 user before the day is out. The FREE upgrade is in the process of being downloaded right now (on the other computer). This is my 'ole reliable' with an early version of XP running it.

It appears as though the afternoon may be over before the download is complete. It has been in the process now for about 15 minutes and is only 7% done. After download I expect that there will be an equally tedious 'installation'.

Are there any of you out there who are running Windows 10 and NOT LIKING IT?

Dusty, I purchased a new computer in December (top of the line HP all in one) with Windows 8. It worked fine, bit I did not like it. Had a pop up from Microsoft last week with the free upgrade offer and took advantage of it. They said the upgrade would download in the background in the near future,(on a schedule) and within a few days it did. I installed in two nights ago, took only about 1 1/2 hours if that. No problems. Be aware that upgrades and fixes are automatic and right now frequent as they tweak some of the bugs. It has worked out well for me, and it feels comfortable (Just like Windows 7). If you are an Internet Explorer user and liked it, (as did I)be aware that Microsoft has replaced it with something called "Edge", similar to Chrome.
All in all, so far, so good.

Chris

Thank you for the feed back, Chris. However, I changed my mind in mid-stream. The download was about 60% complete after a little more than 2 1/2 hours. I terminated the download. That appears to have happened with no consequence.

I will probably do this again but only after I have reassured myself that I have the applications that I apparently will need to reload AND I have backed up all of the data, pictures, drawings, etc. I have a lot in the way of graphics and CAD documents that I cannot take a chance on losing.

What prompted me to do this to start with was the threats that I have been experiencing about applications no longer being supported for XP. I worked for the last couple weeks on resurrecting a computer with Windows 7. I had a mother board failure.

I moved the hard drive into an old gaming computer case (hefty power supply and good cooling) along with a used mother board from a computer that was given to me. Much to my surprise, the system booted and Windows loaded. Windows did an automatic update of drivers and except for the monitor resolution the system looked good. I've now got the resolution issue resolved and I have a pretty good looking and operating W7 computer.

Windows 7 remains on the "to be supported" list for a couple years. This means I have time before I MUST AGAIN do an upgrade.

Guess I got cold feet after all the trash talking that I have done about MS.

I understand your concerns, especially going all the way from XP to 10. All my programs and files remained intact through my upgrade from 8 to 10, don't know if that would be the same from XP. Let us know if it works when you do decide to upgrade. I still have a few XP machines hanging around, maybe even an old Windows 98 one somewhere!

Dust,
I went from 8.1 to 10 without a hitch.
So far, I like 10. Took alittle to get used to, but it runs smooth.

I will let you know. I need to do some cloning and backups before I take the big step. If all fails, I will just have to do a clean install of W7 to get back to where I am now (but only after I do the backups). Except for applications like Sketchup, Reflect and Speccy, that are available as downloads, I have the retail CDs for my applications and OS.

I backed up mine and installed 10, it took a little over 1 hour. Did not need to back up, everything was there after. I found I did not like windows edge and went back to Firefox. So far the rest of it is pretty good.

The fans are running and the monitor on light is lit. That is the only indication I have that "things are working".

This download and installation of Windows 10 has been a real exercise of ones patience. A message came on earlier instructing me to sit back and be patient. The computer will restart several times. Well, it has done that.

The last time I saw a graphic it was "loading drivers" then a reset and black screen.

I sure hope this works. I don't have the patience to start over again.

My only comment (right now) is that Microsoft could do a better job of providing some tactile feedback.

Well, that failed.

Got hung while installing drivers.

Gotta hand to Microsoft though. The system recovered to Windows 7 with no ill effects. I am back to where I can down load Windows 10 IF I want to start all over. Thanking about it.

In the meantime, I need to research the error code C1900101-40017.

Hey Dusty,
Not certain of that error code however, I did experience some driver problems when I used the Media Creation Tool for x64 when I should have used the x32 on a friend's PC. Foolish me, I just took his word that he was running a 64 bit version of 7. When I quit and then went with the 32 bit setup it still took 3 hours  , but no errors at the end.

From the few I have done for friends (using MCT) who got tired of waiting for MS to give them the green light, I've observed a minimum of 3 hours up to 4 1/2. I do agree that instead of "sitting back" it would be better to say "check back in a couple hours".

The blank screen is actually a poor attempt by MS to use a screen saver  . I quick movement of the mouse would have (or should have) brought you back to the completion wheel.

I am surprised that the install let you continue if the drivers were at fault. Initially the program does a verify to see that all drivers ARE current before continuing and if they aren't current, attempts to install the latest.

My only feed back from others is that some don't like the new windows borders and a few font changes.

Sorry about the error. I did a search of my diagnosis documentation but nothing came up. Didn't do an online search.

I'll send an email to see what I get back on it.

Be well,
Ben

PS

Can you post what you have after that error code? It might help track down the problem. Thanks
