This fall I will begin working on a Mark V 500 that the family wanted to restore to as near as possible the colors of the original ‘A’ Series Headstock pictured on the right. I had to snag one, since their headstock had very little original paint left on it.

It closely resembles the color of the unit depicted in the color brochure. There are some beautiful restorations out there that members have done (like the one on the left) and I am hoping some of you will weigh in with an opinion.

Their dad worked many years for Krylon Paints and the request was to paint it with Krylon colors as a memorial to him, while staying true to the Shopsmith color scheme.

Looking at the representative headstock on the right that I snagged off Google, the color match I saw to be closest to what was under the Shopsmith logo in the back (with no service port) which had been protected from the sunlight all these years, seemed to be a near match with the “B” section using Gloss Celery with Gloss Seaweed for the contrasting color. I will get it in this fall and begin working on it.

I personally like the Rustoleum Verde Green hammered with Silver hammered myself, which seems to be a consensus for a good number of forum members, but that’s not an option on this one.

I remember reading somewhere that some folks here weren’t as keen on the Krylon branding based on their experiences using it in restorations. I need to work around those problems where possible.

Any help making this project a more durable and long lasting one with Krylon paint would be appreciated as well as your thoughts on color selection from those of you who have worked with the original Greenies.

This particular paint is self-priming, but I still think I may need a primer underneath, and to watch for build-up under the casting where the belt cover goes which has caused some fitment problems relative to the way tubes.

Are you willing/able to use a paint gun? If so, I will be developing that color for mine.

As for making aerosol's more durable. A good primer and prep can do that. Aerosol products are limited as to what they do. I actually market a 2k epoxy in a aerosol, It does have a shelf life of about 3 weeks from when I put it in the can. It will need to be sanded if using a aerosol over the top of it and it is NOT a fast drying product. PM me if you want more info.

I can indeed use a spray gun option with suitable material.

I will PM you about that option for other systems, but the requisite of this build was that I use Krylon paint to pay homage to her father who worked for Krylon for so many years. As I explained the headstock access hole and the "B" Series Headstocks, they elected for me to use a donor "B" casting to make the unit more serviceable to on-going users.

One of the advantages of using a rattle can off the shelf has always been that touch up paint was generally readily available to anyone just about everywhere for Rustoleum etc. The same would hold true for this unit in Krylon.

Sherwin-Williams owns Krylon, Sherwin-Williams stores use to be able to custom mix paint and put it in a spray can for you. May check it out.

Shopsmith sells touch up paint in spray cans, http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/cata ... ppaint.htm. If a color works for you maybe you can get Shopsmith to say who their supplier is and it will be SW.

Thanks. Shopsmith hasn't shared that current info with anyone I know of, and I believe it is a custom mix they have done.

I wish that it were possible to get the original Pantone color mixes but today's Shopsmith bought the company as warehouse stock from Yuba in 1971, and Yuba bought it from Magna who actually made the Greenies back in the early 1950's in Menlo Park, California. No telling who the original paint OEM was.

Those color mixes today are a bit different than the original even though Shopsmith sells them for the Greenies.

For this project I am going to have to use the off the shelf Rattle Can Krylon, with some type of Krylon primer, after using CitriStrip on everything, which is what they wanted. Down the road though, I intend to do a Shopsmith sourced paint on a Greenie and a Rustoleum Verde Green Greenie.

I will take pictures of each and post them when I am done, but that will be into 2016 I feel certain.

Has anyone out there oven baked the Krylon like some have the Rustoleum to make it more durable?

As you suggested, I spoke with the Sherwin-Williams folks here about the Krylon project and they are getting me as much information as possible to help with it.

One thing they also clued me in on was the ColorSnap® Paint Color Matching App for iPhone etc. which could really come in handy for all sorts of other paint matching projects in the future. I will have to check that out in all types of lighting to see if I am comfortable with results it gives.
